Apple Dumplings, Oh My!

I’m a huge fan of the Pioneer Woman and this is an all time favorite recipe. It always amazes me when there is a surprise ingredient that just doesn’t seem like it fits in the recipe. In this case it’s Mountain Dew Soda. This is a tailgate favorite for tailgate parties at my college Alma Mater…Butler University.

APPLE DUMPLINGS

Ingredients

  • 2 whole Granny Smith Apples
  • 2 8-ounce cans of Crescent Rolls
  • 2 sticks of butter
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • Cinnamon to taste
  • 1 12-ounce can of Mountain Dew Soda

Instructions

  1. Peel and core apples. Cut each apple into 8 slices. (this is when an apple corer comes in handy)
  2. Roll each apple slice in a crescent roll. Place in a 9 x 13 buttered pan. I love using the Pioneer Woman's dishes for this one.
  3. Melt butter, then add sugar and barely stir. Add vanilla and pour entire mixture over apples.
  4. Pour Mountain Dew around the edges of the pan. Sprinkle with cinnamon and bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes.
  5. In our household a big scoop of vanilla is a must with these dumplings.
